Carter House was built some three quarters of a century ago as one of the Grand Dames of Cleveland Street. It is a ten-minute walk to the heart of downtown Chincoteague and the historic drawbridge leading to the mainland. It's here, along Main Street, that you will find some of the town's best shops, several bakeries and restaurants, the venerable Roxy theatre, Mueller's ice cream parlor, and a fish market where the gill-netters dock to off-load their fresh-caught flounder, croaker, and blue fish.

Carter House has gone modern yet with no sacrifice of its original charm. The wrap-around front and side porch remains bright and inviting. The beautifully patterned hardwood floors have just been refinished. The large Audubon prints in den and dining room add a fine touch. The kitchen with its two skylights is new but the antique hoosier cabinet, the stained-glass light fixture, and the shelving done from a chicken coop take one back to another time. Separated by French doors the den, dining room, and living room flow easily into one another and add to the overall sense of spaciousness. There are four second-floor bedrooms (three double, one single) and stairs from the upstairs hall lead to an attractive studio apartment with its own kitchen, bath, and high deck.

Carter House has a full range of amenities and conveniences: central air conditioning; three full baths and an outside hot-and-cold water shower; automatic dishwasher and clothes washer and dryer; wireless broadband for your laptop computer; and satellite TV for both the downstairs den and the studio apartment, with separately programmable receivers and a DVD/VCR or VCR for each. The backyard tile patio, semi-enclosed and rather private, is made for crabfests and for grilling steaks or seafood.
